WeiPhone has posted an alleged backplate picture of Apple’s much rumored low-cost iPhone. The image is unverified, and there’s little information attached. However, the rounded edges and plastic-looking material suggest we could be getting a small glimpse at what Apple’s more colorful iPhone lineup could look like. There seems to be a single LED flash, along with a rounded microphone hole, rather than a pill shaped hole as found on the iPhone 5.

One of the biggest differentiating factors of the cheaper handset, aside from plastic materials, is Apple’s reported decision to take a more iPod-like approach, with multiple color options giving consumers more choice. We haven’t seen any new big Apple hardware yet this year, and it’s still unclear when a lower cost device might hit. But Tim Cook previously said we wouldn’t get anything new until this fall, so our guess is a September/October release.
